These are her father’s works and she says having them displayed in her house gives her a sense of closeness to her deceased dad. Piedra becomes emotional while recalling memories of his dad working on his art projects at school.
Raul Piedra has been dubbed Master Texture Builder of the Philippines. His abstract paintings are famous for the intensity of colors and praised for its unique textures.
“Waking up in the morning and seeing my father’s works around me makes me feel that he still with me, still with us,” said the 27-year old accountant.
But as an art enthusiast, Piedra wants to do more than just stare at her father’s paintings every day. She wants to share them to the world and encourage others to appreciate Filipino artworks like she does, starting in the Netherlands, where she works as a financial controller of Nomura Europe Finance. This enthusiasm inspired her to turn her home into a gallery.
“We love art but unfortunately, we don’t know how to make art, we don’t how to paint and make sculptures. And this is our way of sharing our passion to everyone. Our first goal is to be known as a home gallery that gives you a comfortable feeling, a home gallery that will make you think how the art will fit into your apartment,” she said.
With the help of partner Danny Do, Piera opened ARTstoneWorks Gallery in Almere, the first Filipino home gallery in the Netherlands.
ARTstoneWorks Gallery features the works of Piedra’s father Raul and other Filipino artists like Demosthenes Campos, Joselito Jandayan and Rey Piedra.
Piedra decided not only to focus on traditional arts but to showcase modern and mixed art like photographs and digital arts as well, dubbing their selections as “contemporary arts that lasts forever”.
Peidra believes that Filipino artworks can also be known worldwide like the pieces of the old masters.
“Our future plan is basically to get more Filipino artworks because I think Filipino artworks are nice, they are beautiful and different. I mean, if you have the works of the old masters going from one museum to the other, why not my Dad’s why not Filipino artworks by distinct Filipino artists?” she said.
Also displayed in ARTstoneWorks Gallery are works of artists of different nationalities including Paulo Ferreira from Brazil, Rene van der Meulen, GabyGaby and Barend Houtsmuller from the Netherlands and Vladimir Hristov from Macedonia.
“Our focus is on Filipino artworks but we would also like to feature other artists on the side who we think are good and different. The goal of this gallery is produce quality art,” she added.
ARTstoneWorks is located in Koperslagerhof 31, Almere, The Netherlands.
